Inflation low in January – despite energy prices

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Friday, February 17th, 2012 report, the consumer price index remained low for the month.

According to the 8:30 A.M. report release, “the Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers, (CPI-U), increased .2 % in January 2012, on a seasonally adjusted basis.”   The bureau additionally reported that over the past 12 months, the all items index increased 2.9 percent before seasonal adjustment.

Considering the recent steep rise in gasoline and energy prices, the low inflation rate has to be considered a pleasant surprise.

The bureau reported that the index for energy increased 6.2% over the last year, and the food index rose 4.4% over the same time period.
