Unemployment rate for foreign born down

According to the Thursday, May 26th release by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for the foreign born was 9.1% in 2011.    This percentage is down from 9.8% in 2010.

This statistic is significant, as the foreign born represent 15.1% of the population in the United States.    The representative sample for these statistics was approximately 60,000 households.     The definition of foreign born is defined as those currently living within the United States, but are not citizens and were born outside of the United States.

These statistics include legal immigrants, refugees, temporary residents such as temporary students and temporary workers, as well as undocumented immigrants, if applicable.    In 2011, according to the bureau, there were 24.4 million foreign born workers in the United States.

It is expected that the unemployment percentage of foreign workers would be higher than that of native workers.  However, it is a pleasant surprise that the unemployment rate for foreign workers is only very modestly higher than that of native born workers.
